Volunteer

Our team of volunteers is the life blood of the Archive and we have plenty of practical, digital and marketing volunteer roles available, both on a regular or ad-hoc basis.

Our roles don’t require special experience or existing skills so if you’re passionate and enthusiastic we’d love to have you as part of our exciting Volunteer team. These roles are also a fantastic opportunity for students looking to gain essential employability skills or expand their research capabilities.

Have a look at the roles below and if any take your fancy get in touch using the form at the bottom of the page.

Collections care

Our collection is comprised of over 100,000 items. Each requires careful identification, cataloguing, and preservation. Our collection is split into several categories so you can choose one that interests you most or work with them all!

The kind of activities you could get involved in include:

  • Preparation - duplicate & quality checks, de-stapling, identification

  • Cataloguing - adding to database, scanning/photographing

  • Filing - adding to the collection storage area

Collection categories:

  • Print publications – books, magazines, brochures, catalogues, ephemera

  • Product files – individual advertisements organised by company

  • Transport photographs - individual photographs from a range of eras that require date/vehicle identification and cataloguing. This would be a great option for anyone interested in a remote role they can do at home!

  • Breweriana - beer mats, beer glasses, pub advertising

  • Objects - signage, promotional items

Marketing & fundraising

Through the archive collection we aim to connect with the public and researchers to reveal the fascinating history of daily life and industries through advertising. Our marketing and fundraising team help raise awareness of the archive, fund new acquisitions and help to provide greater access to our vast collection.

The kind of activities you could get involved in include:

  • Content creator - writing/researching blog articles, photography, videography

  • Social media coordinator - preparing and deploying posts, interacting with followers

  • Events promotion – organising and running events, preparing and delivering talks

  • Selling duplicates – we aim to sell duplicates of publications and advertisements on eBay to raise funds for the Archive. This role would include photography, listing and posting items and would be a great remote role you can do from home.

Buildings care

Are you handy with aspects of DIY? Then we’d love your help with the routine maintenance of our archive building. Our site contains over 100,000 items (and growing!) and all this requires constant monitoring and adjusting of our facilities.

The kind of activities you could get involved in include:

  • Joinery to improve building and collection storage

  • Cleaning - clearing gutters, cleaning storage and communal areas

  • Preparing wood for sale – alongside the archive we have small area for cutting, chopping and storing wood for fundraising sales

  • Electrician
